Summer Houses

Inspired by an aphorism in the pages of this week’s New Yorker (Fran Lebowitz: “Soda is recreation—the summer house—of the poor”), and in memory of Paul Fussell, here are summer homes for everybody (that is, for all of the ten classes you can read about in Class).

Top out-of-sight: estate in Scotland

Upper: house in Ulster County

Upper middle: iphone

Middle: fifty shades of gray

High proletarian: Caramel Frappuccino

Mid-proletarian: android

Low proletarian: soda

Destitute: store-brand soda

Bottom out-of-sight: soccer*

X: McCarren Park

*At least in New York, where deportation, God Bless the place, is unlikely
